The EasyPal program can be used to transfer any format of data file on an HF, VHF or UHF band using SSB or FM modes.  The bandwidth required is 2.5 kHz, which is compatible with SSB.  FM bandwidths are 12.5 kHz or 25 kHz, so the program author could increase the data rate if he wrote a different version to utilise the 12.5 kHz bandwidth available with FM.

For VHF / UHF FM, the data rate is 6360 bps using a 2.5 kHz bandwidth data signal.  A 9 kB file can be transferred in 25 seconds.  A 40 kB file can be transferred in 67 seconds.  When using EasyPal, it is best to zip the file to be transmitted to make it smaller.

A free download of the program can be obtained from here.  Get the version dated 7 OCT 2014.

See the bottom of this page to get a help file for EasyPal.

Radios with a standard 6 way mini-DIN data port connector are the best to use with EasyPal (or any digital mode).  Apart from the radio and a PC running Windows XP or Vista and EasyPal, the only other item required is a suitable interface cable to connect the radio to the PC.

Commercial sources in the UK for data interfaces include ZML Electronics and ML&S.  The former sells passive transformer coupled devices.  The latter sells devices which contain their own sound card.
