This event is a British Heart Foundation cycle ride (Lifecycle) in Dalby Forest. Communications are organised by Richmond (North Yorkshire) RAYNET Group, assisted by East Yorkshire (Hull) and Cleveland RAYNET groups. There are blue, green and red cycle routes. Red is the longest at 26 miles. A RAYNET operator on a bike acts as Sweeper behind the last cyclist on the red route. He uses APRS mode to automatically transmit his location to the Control station, which can "see" him on a PC map display. The location is updated every few minutes. As the RAYNET Sweeper is no longer young and the red route contains many steep ascents, some say that the APRS location bleeps help Control to know which tree the Sweeper died under. For more information on the APRS mode (Amateur Packet Reporting System), see APRS. |
