General

System Fusion can transfer small picture files to other similar radios.  The usual assumption is that the photographs were taken using a camera mike and stored on the radio's memory card.  Any jpg format photograph, picture or diagram on a PC can be used, but the exact method of doing so doesn't seem to be easily available.  Although it takes time and effort, it can be done.  The method below which works and the method which doesn't work are described below.

Limitations

Putting pictures files from your PC onto your Fusion rig's memory card will effectively delete any existing picture files, so take precautions.
You can't add a single picture file to the memory card and expect others to remain.  They won't.
The larger the picture file, the longer it will take to transmit.  Keep file size down, definitely much less than 40 kB.

Consider

Once you have successfully put several picture files into your Fusion rig via its memory card, keep those picture files which you prepared on your PC.  In that way, you can later add more, whilst keeping those you wish to keep.

Data Files

Above, it was indicated that adding new picture files will delete existing picture files.  It doesn't really.  The Fusion rig looks at data files on the memory card to get information on which picture files exist.  There may be a huge number of picture files present on the memory card, but if their details aren't in the correct data files then they don't exist as far as the Fusion rig is concerned.  You can delete them.

Requirements

A working knowledge of using Windows Explorer to navigate drives and folders, create folders, rename files, copy files and delete files.
A Fusion rig with its micro-SD memory card.
An adaptor to plug the memory card into your PC.
The Freeware DK5KW program.  It is available for free download in the Yahoo Group’s YaesuSystemFusion group, Files / Misc folder and called "-FTM400_Prog.zip".  It is in the German language
The VK6JAH instruction document on how to use the DK5KW program for those who can't read German.  It is available in the above Misc folder and called "FTM400 Image Instructions.doc".  You may manage without it.
A program to view jpg format picture files.
A program to resize picture files to a smaller size. Perhaps Microsoft Paint.
A program to alter the level of compression of a saved jpg file.  Perhaps the free IrfanView32.  You may have a problem with the RIOT plug-in if you use IrfanView64.  Note IrfanView32 will work in a 64 bit Windows PC.  Download the IrfanView program then download its plug-ins.
The above three could be done with a single program if you have it or can find it.

The Wrong Method

I spent many hours with zero success.  My aim was to reduce the picture file size by reducing its resolution using a target file size.  With a jpg format picture file, some image editing programs can maintain the pixel size and reduce the file size to e.g. 8 kB or 15 kB.  That seemed to work.  The resulting pictures weren't too bad when viewed on a PC.  When in the Fusion rig, they were all completely black.

PC Directory Structure

With a Windows PC, you usually expect programs to be installed in the "C:/Program Files/" directory (folder).  Windows programs come with an installation program, typically called "setup.exe" so that the operating system knows the program is present, which files it requires, where they are and information is written to the registry.  With very simple programs, they work without needing an installation process.  The DK5KW program is one of these.  Just copy its unzipped files to a suitable folder and it will work.  It creates data files giving information to a Fusion rig on which picture files are present.

Because I use an automatic file backup to an external hard drive of all files in my "My Documents" folder, that is where I put the DK5KW program.   I created a new a folder called “FTM400_Image_Prog” under “My Documents”, then copied the program files into it.  As a place to put picture files while I worked on them, I created a new sub-folder called "Images" under folder “FTM400_Image_Prog”.

The DK5KW FT400 program

There are two important points to note:-

The picture files to be processed must be in the same directory (folder) as the executable file “FTM400.exe” .
When the program runs, it deletes all jpg files in the same directory (folder) as the executable file “FTM400.exe” .

Stage 1

With your memory card in your PC, view all jpg picture files in the memory card's "PHOTO" folder.  Copy all which you want to keep to your "Images"  folder and edit their filenames in the "Images"  folder so they end in " 40%", e.g. Change "MF0lOZ000008.jpg" to "MF0lOZ000008 40%.jpg".  Now delete all files in the memory card's "PHOTO" folder.

Select jpg picture files from your hard drive which you want to put in your Fusion rig.  Copy them to the "Images" folder.

Stage 2

You will need an image editing program which can resize picture files and keep the same aspect ratio.  Run Microsoft Paint or your chosen program, select Open a File, navigate to “Images" and open the first file, ignoring any which end in " 40%".  Resize it to 320 x 240 pixels.  Save As a different file name.  If the file was “Dead Dog.jpg”, save it as “Dead Dog 320.jpg”.

Open the next file which doesn’t have a name ending in “ 320” or " 40%" and repeat until all files have been processed.  Close the program, unless it can also set the jpg compression factor.

Stage 3

Run your picture editing program which can set compression depth.  Select Open a File, navigate to “Images” and open the first file which ends with “ 320”.  Save it with 40% jpg compression as a different file name.  If the file was called “Choc Pud 320.jpg”, save it as “Choc Pud 320 40%.jpg”.  Repeat with all files ending in “320”.

Stage 4

In the “FTM400_Image_Prog” folder – the one containing file “FTM400.exe”, delete all files of type jpg format.  In its “PHOTO” folder, delete all files.  In its QSOLOG folder, delete all files.  If there are many files, the fastest way in Windows Explorer is to hit <Ctrl-A> (A for ALL files).  That will select all, to save you selecting them individually.  Then hit your keyboard’s <Delete> key.

In your sub-folder ”Images", select all files ending with “40%”.  That can be done using <Ctrl-Click> which allows you to highlight more than one at a time.  Use your right mouse button to drag them into your “FTM400_Image_Prog” folder and drop them on a white space. Select pop-up menu “Copy”, not “Move”.

Stage 5

Double click the “FTM400.exe” icon to run the program.  Don’t be scared by the foreign words.  Over-type the callsign in the top left with your own.  You will see every jpg file in the folder and all will end with “40%”.  Select all jpg files by <Ctrl-Click> on each.  You can’t use the <Ctrl-A> shortcut here.  A faster method for many files would be to <Click> the top file, then <Shift-Click> the bottom file.

Now the easy part.  In that file list area, <Right-Click>.  Done!  Close the “FTM400.exe” program.

Stage 6

The DK5KW program changed your file names and put your picture files into its “PHOTO” folder.  It also created three data files in the “QSOLOG” folder.

Copy all files from the “FTM400_Image_Prog” folder “PHOTO” to the memory card’s “PHOTO” folder.   When in the “PHOTO” folder, you can use the <Ctrl-A> shortcut to select all before you copy them to the memory card.

In a similar fashion, copy all data files from the “FTM400_Image_Prog” folder “QSOLOG” to the memory card’s “QSOLOG” folder.  Wow!  You notice that the program killed all of your jpg files in the program folder!  A good job you still have them in “Images”.

Stage 7

Eject the external drive which is your memory card or use the “Safely Eject Media” icon at the right of your system tray.  You may get away with just unplugging your memory card if you feel lucky.  With your Fusion radio turned off, plug in your memory card.

Turn on your Fusion radio.  If an FTM-400 model, hit the <F> key, then click LOG.  You will see either a list of text messages or pictures.  You can switch between the two lists.  Oh dear!  You have lost all of your picture names.  

If you wish to edit all titles, work through them all, one at a time.  Open the first.  See the picture.  At the top right, click EDIT.  Change the name of the picture.  If necessary, look in your PC’s “Images” folder to find the same picture to help you give a name, unless you use boring letters and numbers as file names.  Save the new name by hitting ENT.  Continue until they are all done.

When you look at your list of pictures, you will see their titles.  For received pictures, the list shows only the sending callsign and date / time.  Received pictures can have titles edited to something meaningful for when they are displayed, but the list won’t show titles.

Stage 8

If you are quite happy with the pictures in your radio, you may wish to delete all files from folder “Images”.  It is better to keep all ending in “40%” and delete all others from “Images”.  In that way, you won’t feel suicidal when you later want to add just a single extra picture to your radio and realise that you can’t, as it will delete all others.

Time to Transmit

The bigger the picture file, the longer it will take.  The lower the jpg compression quality, the smaller the picture file and the faster to send it, but it may look awful.  Here are some times to transmit.
